Covid-19 Pandemic At Critical Stage-WHO

While the advent of vaccines gives the world hope to emerge from this crisis, however, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global pandemic is still showing significant improvement.

New Covid-19 cases in the last two months recorded an average increase of 4.4 million per week. In fact, with more countries reducing their sanctions measures, it will further prolong the crisis.

In January and February, the world has seen a decline in cases for six consecutive weeks, according to WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

However, it is now seeing an increase of seven consecutive weeks in new cases and the death toll has also increased in the last four weeks.

This huge increase, in part, occurred in Asia and the Middle East. India is now the second country to record the highest number of cases after the United States, beating Brazil to third place.

Meanwhile, WHO technical chief for Covid-19, Maria Van Kerkhove told that the pandemic is at a critical point right now.

The WHO also stressed that practices that have been in place for a year, namely social incarceration, wearing of face masks and hand hygiene are still important to stop infections and save lives.

Flexibility and inconsistent implementation lately are a big part of the reason why this virus is still contagious.

Covid-19 cases rose 9% worldwide last week, while the death toll rose 5%.
