The European Union (EU) is prepared to consider tougher retaliation if the UK fails to implement its post -Brexit obligations on Northern Ireland, according to an EU official.

The EU’s patience is said to be thinning and it may use all available approaches if the UK fails to stop unilateral actions and threats in the dispute over the Northern Ireland issue.

Northern Ireland has been a key focal point between the UK and the EU since Britain exited the bloc earlier this year, where protests have erupted in the region in opposition to new border checks and trade customs documents to cross the Irish Sea.

Subsequently, the EU has taken legal action against the UK for unilaterally changing the terms of their post-Brexit agreement with respect to the Northern Ireland protocol.

Meanwhile, in a separate report, European Commission vice -president Maros Sefcovic warned the UK not to take further unilateral action to delay post -Brexit inspections of goods entering Northern Ireland from Britain.

The statement came as the UK and the EU are expected to meet on Wednesday to find a solution to the issue.
