Kind of a Money Heist story but a crypto version.
The United States has filed a civil foreclosure complaint to return more than US $ 154 million in funds allegedly stolen from an employee of a Tokyo-based Sony Corp. subsidiary after it was seized by law enforcement during an FBI investigation.
According to sources, Rei Ishii an employee of Sony Life Insurance Company Ltd in Tokyo was accused of embezzling the funds in May and converting them into the latest form of cryptocurrency worth 3,879 Bitcoins or more than US $ 180 million.
The funds were seized by authorities on Dec. 1 after the FBI conducted an investigation and found Ishii had falsified transaction instructions until the funds were transferred to an account he controlled at a bank in La Jolla, California.
The justice department confirmed all of the stolen Bitcoin had been recovered and preserved and Ishii had been prosecuted in Japan.
