Sony Group Corp Japan has launched Sony Mobility Inc in their quest to venture into the field of electric cars (EVs).
According to Sony chairman and president Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony Mobility Inc. will be launched in the spring of this year to study the EV market and leverage their strengths in the entertainment field to play a big role in next -generation mobility.
Kenichiro Yoshida who attended the CES technology trade show has introduced a prototype sports utility vehicle (SUV), the VISION-S02 which uses the same EV platform as the VISION-S 01 coupe previously announced in December 2020 in Europe.
Following the launch, Sony shares in Tokyo jumped 24%, outpacing the Nikkei index.
Sony's position as a major leader in consumer electricity received huge competition from Samsung Electronics Co. South Korea but Sony is seen to still have a secret weapon of technology such as sensors critical to autonomous driving.
In addition, Sony also remains one of the world's largest entertainment companies dominating video games, leading movie franchises and audio systems.
