Nine years of conservative rule in Australia ended on Saturday, after the Anthony Albanese-led Labor Party defeated the Liberal-National coalition by Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the country’s federal election.

Morrison acknowledged the decision when local broadcaster ABC projected its defeat at midnight local time that Labor won 72 seats while the Liberal-National party trailed with 54 seats.

However, it remains unclear whether the Labor party will secure a majority with 76 seats in parliament, but leader Anthony Albanese is set to become the country’s 31st prime minister to replace Morrison.

The official results will be known in a few days with the process of counting 2.7 million postal votes underway.

The Labor party’s victory also meant the people’s desire for ‘change’ after the Covid-19 hit, in which Albanese had promised stronger action on climate change.

Speaking after his victory, Albanese told that it was time to radically reset the way the country reacted to climate challenges.

After being sworn in as Australia’s new leader on Monday, he will fly to an international summit in Tokyo to meet with the leaders of the United States, India and Japan, also known as ‘Quad’.
