Get ready for Europe! This is a warning before Russia shuts down gas supplies

The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, warned Russia may cut off gas supplies to Europe this winter.

While a full closure is not a scenario that will really happen, but he warned that Europe needs to prepare a contingency plan as a precaution.

In recent weeks, there are European countries claiming that the supply of gas received from Russia is significantly reduced than expected.

Moscow said the reduction was due to technical problems it faced, but Europe saw it as Russia's excuse to cut supplies.

Fatih Birol said he believed Russia would continue to look at different issues to find reasons to further reduce gas shipments to Europe and possibly even cut it completely.

Last week, natural gas flow through Nord Stream 1, one of the main pipelines from Russia to Europe, was only 40% of capacity.

Before the Russian war in Ukraine broke out, Moscow was a major importer of gas to Europe receiving about 40%. However, that figure has now dropped to about 20%.
