A good start to the year for Capital A Bhd after witnessing a 153% year-on-year jump in passenger traffic across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines in the first quarter of 2023.

According to its latest quarterly operating results, the company flew 13.2 million passengers in the first quarter compared to only 5.2 million a year ago.

Not only that, but its load factor also increased to 89% from 75% in the same period, indicating it is back to pre-pandemic levels.

More encouragingly, passenger capacity reportedly jumped 71% to 14.8 million seats in the first quarter from the level of the first quarter of 2019.

Thanks also to AirAsia Thailand which led stronger flight growth with the number of passengers increasing 216% year-on-year to 4.6 million from 1.5 million previously.

This follows high traffic from the China route which was largely the main contributor to the 92% load factor jump in the quarter.

Meanwhile in Malaysia, the low-cost carrier saw a 103% increase year-on-year from 2.8 million to 5.7 million passengers, with the passenger factor jumping to 88% from 74%.

As of 3pm, Capital A shares were unchanged at 75 sen with a market value of RM3.09 billion.
