Set aside the USD, Argentina Uses Yuan to Pay for Imports

The U.S. dollar continues to be viewed in the dark after the Argentine government announced that the country will begin paying for Chinese imports in yuan against the USD.

Argentina's Economy Minister, Sergio Massa said the move was an effort to reduce the outflow of dollars from the country.

Argentina is struggling with a critical shortage of US dollar reserves following a sharp drop in agricultural exports caused by a prolonged drought.

In addition, the political uncertainty ahead of this year's elections also affected its reserves.

In April, the government aimed to pay about $1 billion of Chinese imports in yuan followed by $790 million in monthly payments.

Meanwhile in a separate report, the yuan surpassed the US dollar for the first time to become the most used currency in China's cross-border payments in March.
