The $2,000 level remains the 'playable' place for gold prices amid volatile market movements.

Highlighting the Asian session, the yellow metal traded little changed at around $1,997 an ounce, while gold futures were higher at $2,005 an ounce.

Risk-on sentiment remains lingering in the market amid concerns over the wider impact of the banking crisis following a grim report from First Republic Bank.

This helped the price of gold to soar to $2,009 per ounce at the start of the New York session before retreating shortly thereafter.

Markets are expected to remain volatile heading into next week's FOMC policy meeting, where the Federal Reserve (Fed) is expected to raise rates by 25 basis points.

However, before that investors will first examine the preliminary estimate of the US gross domestic product (GDP) data for the first quarter in the New York session today.
