Penang Chief Minister Orders Policy Review for Social Justice
No wind, no storm, suddenly the 5% discount for first-time home buyers from the Indian Muslim community in Penang that was recently announced has been suspended with immediate effect?
The move was announced by the Penang Government itself with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow himself ordering the policy to be reviewed to be extended to all home buyers regardless of race or religion.
This move was taken following heavy criticism, especially from the Penang MCA, which described the policy as racist and against the principle of “Malaysia for Malaysians” often carried by DAP.
Chow stressed that housing discounts should benefit all parties regardless of race, in line with the need to uphold social justice and help sell unsold housing units.
The announcement of the 5% house discount policy was originally made on June 5 by the state Housing Committee Chairman, Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo, under the Madani Home Ownership Campaign.
However, after DAP's own leadership voiced concerns and protests against the policy, it is now being reviewed by the State Executive Council.
