Sarawak introduces a sustainable farming model as a step to reduce dependence on imported cattle and livestock feed.
Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg said this initiative was implemented to address the high price of beef in Sarawak, which is RM95 per kilogram, making it the most expensive in Malaysia.
Abang Johari said the high price was due to Sarawak's heavy dependence on livestock feed and cattle from Australia.
Abang Johari discussed that Sarawak is now importing cattle raised through the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) in Australia with higher dollar payments and taxes.
He also added that a new strategy in farming methods is to implement a feedlot farming system and no longer traditional open grazing to improve the health and quality of cattle.
He said this while attending a Qorban Ibadah at the Al-Kawthar Mosque in Gedong, Samarahan division, yesterday.
The price of beef in Sarawak is RM64 per kilogram, much higher than other states such as Kelantan at RM27.72, Perlis at RM30, Terengganu at RM30.29, Sabah at RM35, Selangor at RM39.28, and Kuala Lumpur at RM48.53.
