Popular cryptocurrency platform Coinbase was informed in early January that customer data had been leaked by an employee of an outsourcing company, months before the incident was publicly disclosed.

In a regulatory filing on May 14, Coinbase confirmed a data breach involving India-based firm TaskUs.

According to a Reuters report, five former TaskUs employees revealed that one of the staff members was arrested for taking screenshots of a computer screen using his personal phone.

The employee and an accomplice are accused of providing personal information of Coinbase customers to hackers in exchange for a payment. Coinbase reportedly took immediate action after the incident was discovered.

TaskUs, a US-based business process outsourcing company operating in India, is believed to be handling customer support for Coinbase.

The company is currently being sued in Manhattan District Court over the incident.

More than 200 TaskUs employees were reportedly laid off en masse in January, a move that sparked protests and widespread media coverage in India.

However, only two individuals have been identified as the main culprits behind the breach that affected nearly 70,000 Coinbase customers.
