No longer just a work companion, but a ‘level-up’ when OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is now ‘trained’ to assist the US military.

OpenAI has just been awarded a $200 million (RM848.1 million) contract by the US Department of Defense to carry out a pilot program that evaluates the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in national administration and security tasks.

This year-long project is being carried out under a new initiative known as OpenAI for Government, which brings together all the company’s collaborations with government agencies such as NASA, NIH, Air Force Research Laboratory and the Treasury Department.

Among the main objectives are to develop AI systems to facilitate access to healthcare for military personnel and help prevent cyberattacks.

OpenAI is also currently working with defense company Anduril Industries to build AI technology for anti-drone systems.

This move marks an increasingly broad engagement between OpenAI and the US government, especially in the security aspect.

The company has also appointed former top Pentagon officials and former head of the National Security Agency (NSA) as key advisors, reinforcing their commitment to national security policy.

Is ChatGPT becoming the greatest digital weapon of the century? The world is now witnessing how AI is not only changing the way we work, but also the way nations defend themselves.
