According to Communications Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, all content produced through artificial intelligence (AI) may be required to be labeled as ‘AI generated’ when the Online Safety Act 2024 is enforced by the end of this year.
The move is being considered by the government as an effort to curb the misuse of AI content, especially in cases of fraud, impersonation and the spread of defamation on social media.
When met by the media after attending an event in Bangsar, he stressed that the action is important to ensure that online safety continues to be guaranteed in line with the rapid pace of digital technology.
Although several platforms have begun to label AI content voluntarily, a more comprehensive and proactive approach is seen to be needed.
Touching on the issue of global regulations, he explained that there are no truly satisfactory guidelines so far, but active discussions are taking place at the international level, including under the United Nations (UN) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
At the same time, he also shared his experience participating in the AI for Good Summit in Geneva which also opened up a space for discussion on the need for AI regulation.
Fahmi emphasized that AI should not be seen as a replacement for humans, but rather the younger generation like Gen Alpha should be exposed to the benefits and limitations of this technology in an ethical manner.
