The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz announced that Malaysia has the potential to become an artificial intelligence (AI) hub through a collaboration between Nvidia and YTL Power International Berhad (YTL).
Tengku Zafrul stated that the development of green technology-based AI infrastructure with an investment worth RM10 billion includes the construction of an AI data center and the use of graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia.
He also emphasized that the current priority is to develop Malaysia's sovereign large language model (LLM), which will strengthen the country's position as an AI hub and center in ASEAN.
Through his statement on Facebook, YTL will also build an AI ecosystem in collaboration with local technology partners, suppliers and contractors.
The development proves that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's international meetings are not just rhetoric, but a step to realize investments that can change the country's economic and technological landscape.
In December 2023, Anwar met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and YTL Power Managing Director Yeoh Seok Hong to discuss investment potential and efforts to make Malaysia an AI hub.
