Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to open 10 new border gates on the borders of Kalimantan, Sabah and Sarawak following the relocation of the Indonesian capital to East Kalimantan.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has allocated RM1 billion to prepare for the opening of selected border gates.
Saifuddin also said the gates would be opened after the agreement was finalised, with relevant ministries and agencies building infrastructure such as roads and communication substations.
He also discussed the more than 300-kilometre-long border gates with three accesses, namely land, river and air, which have the potential to increase people's movement and bring benefits to the economy.
He said this after attending the INTAN Minister Conversation (IMC) 2025 programme themed "Our Country, Security Shared Responsibility" at the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN).
