Trump Surprises! Global Tariffs to Be Set at 15%-20%?

President Donald Trump announced that he would likely impose a blanket tariff of 15% to 20% on all imports into the United States from countries that have not yet signed a bilateral trade agreement with Washington.

“For the whole world, I think it will be in the 15% to 20% range,” Trump said while speaking with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Turnberry, Scotland. He added, “I think 15 or 20% is a good number or maybe one of those two numbers.”

The move represents a big jump from the 10% base tariff Trump announced in April, and will have a wide-ranging impact on countries that have not yet negotiated exclusive trade deals with the U.S. He explained that the United States cannot negotiate individually with more than 200 countries, so a blanket tariff rate will be set for those who want to trade with the world’s largest economy.

Trump's statement came just days before the August 1 deadline he set, while dozens of countries still do not have any formal trade agreements with the United States.
