Israeli energy company NewMed Energy has announced a $35 billion deal to supply natural gas to Egypt until December 31, 2040 or until the entire contract quantity is supplied.
The new deal will increase the total gas supply to the country to 130 billion cubic meters, compared to the 2019 deal of only 60 billion cubic meters at a rate of 4.5 billion cubic meters per year.
NewMed holds more than 45% of the exploration rights in the Leviathan gas field, Israel’s largest gas field, which began operating in 2019.
In addition to meeting domestic energy needs, production from the field is also exported to Egypt and Jordan, making Israel one of the region’s key energy suppliers.
The development comes as Egypt reportedly received two 107-ton diesel fuel trucks to be brought into Gaza after Israel tightened aid supplies in March.
A fuel shortage in Gaza has affected hospital operations, forcing doctors to focus only on critically ill patients.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, six more deaths from starvation and malnutrition were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from these causes to 175 since the war began, including 93 children.
