Chinese electric carmaker BYD has broken Elon Musk's Tesla's record for car sales in the European Union (EU).
Breaking Tesla's sales record for two consecutive months, BYD's car sales increased threefold last month compared to August 2024.
Meanwhile, Tesla's sales fell by 36.6% and saw its market share fall to 1.2%.
At the same time, European automotive company Stellantis returned to record sales growth of 2.2%, marking a recovery after a long period of decline.
The increase in sales of electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) contributed to the EU automotive market growth of 5.3%, strengthening the influence of new players from China.
The decision has raised concerns among traditional European automakers about their cost competitiveness, technological innovation, and ability to maintain a position in the increasingly aggressive electric market.
