Spain and Italy have sent warships to protect the Global South Flotilla (GSF) carrying aid to Gaza following drone attacks near Greek waters.

Marikaiti Stasinou, a spokeswoman for March Gaza Greece, which is accompanying the GSF, reported that their ship was attacked by 12 drones in international waters, about 56 kilometers from the Greek island of Gavdos.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the humanitarian convoy, which included people from 45 countries, was carrying food for the people of Gaza and expressing solidarity with their suffering.

He also explained that Spain would send a naval ship from Cartagena with all the necessary resources if the flotilla needed assistance and rescue operations.

The Spanish government stressed that international law must be respected and that people's right to sail safely in the Mediterranean Sea must be preserved.

The statement was made while attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced that Italy would also send a naval frigate to assist the GSF, which was attacked by drones.

He has ordered the Fasan frigate, which is sailing north of Crete in Operation Mare Sicuro, to provide assistance to Italians in the flotilla.

Israel has not yet issued a statement on the drone attack, although it has previously criticized the GSF for its alleged support for Hamas.
