The Indonesian government has estimated the losses from a series of protests and riots that have hit several regions in the country at nearly 900 billion rupiah (RM285 million), with East Java being the most affected area.

Labor Minister Dody Hanggodo said the estimate includes various public facilities and infrastructure that have been damaged or destroyed since the unrest broke out last week.

According to him during a media interview, the total losses across Indonesia that have been successfully detected are nearly 900 million rupiah.

This includes damage to various infrastructure including the burned Regional Representative Council (DPRD) building, toll gates, public transportation services and various other facilities.

Among the most affected areas is East Java, including the fire of the Grahadi National Building, which has cultural heritage status, the Kediri City DPRD Office and several other public facilities such as stations and bus stops that were also burned.

He also confirmed major damage in Makassar, South Sulawesi after the Makassar DPRD building was burned from Friday night to early Saturday morning.

The protests, which originally stemmed from public anger over the increase in the lavish allowances of elected representatives, have spread into a national movement protesting security force violence after a video of the killing of a food delivery man by paramilitary police went viral.
