US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Turkey will agree to stop buying crude oil from Russia.
The agreement would prompt the US to lift sanctions and reopen the way for the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Ankara.
However, the situation is seen as pressuring the Turkish government to align its energy policy with Washington's geopolitical interests.
In a meeting at the White House, Trump described the discussions with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan as very conclusive on various issues but did not provide any further details regarding the announcements that will be made later.
Previously, Trump has ordered European countries to stop buying oil from Russia in exchange for tariffs in an effort to suppress support for Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
Trump's move to make defense and energy issues a diplomatic weapon has raised concerns that Turkey may be forced to choose between strategic relations with Russia or closer military cooperation with the US.
Ankara is now in a critical situation where the pressure could undermine its position in NATO and its diplomatic bargaining power, especially if it is forced to make drastic decisions regarding energy sources and American weapons purchases.
