The government announced a new initiative under Budget 2026 that offers exemptions from PTPTN loan repayments to students from poor families who are pursuing their studies at public higher education institutions (IPTA).
This measure aims to ease the financial burden of low-income groups and ensure more inclusive access to higher education.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, students from extremely poor and poor households registered under the PADU system are eligible to enjoy this benefit, subject to the set academic performance conditions.
This initiative also complements the government's agenda to empower social mobility through quality education.
The government expects this measure to benefit tens of thousands of students each year, in addition to helping produce more highly skilled workers from low-income family backgrounds.
