A total of 600 employees at Meta Platforms’ artificial intelligence (AI) division are to be laid off as part of a move to speed up decision-making and streamline the company’s operations.
Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang, who joined the company in June after a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, announced the layoffs in an internal memo confirmed by a Meta spokesperson.
He also said that through the restructuring, Meta hopes to reduce bureaucracy and speed up decision-making so that the AI team can be more agile.
According to reports, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly frustrated with the company’s slow progress in AI development following mixed feedback on the Llama 4 model.
The newly established TBD lab is not affected by the layoffs, but staff across the AI infrastructure division, AI Basic Research unit and product-focused units will be affected.
Employees in the United States (US) were notified on Wednesday morning that their termination date is set for November 21.
In addition to the 16-week severance package, Meta is also offering an additional two weeks of pay for each year of service.
In the meantime, affected employees are encouraged to apply for other positions within the company.
Despite facing massive layoffs, Meta has continued to invest in AI, including a $27 billion deal with Blue Owl Capital to fund Hyperion's data center in Louisiana.
