US President Donald Trump has called for Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, both Democrats, to be jailed as his administration prepares to send troops to the city.
Johnson and Pritzker are not facing any criminal charges, but both have spoken out against Trump's crackdown on immigration and his plan to send the National Guard to the Democratic-controlled city.
Trump's call comes as his political rival, former FBI Director James Comey, is set to appear in court to face a controversial criminal charge.
Since entering politics in 2015, Trump has often called for his opponents to be jailed, but Comey is the first individual to face prosecution.
Trump has accused Johnson and Pritzker of failing to protect immigration officers working in Chicago.
Trump also warned that he would send troops to more US cities, which he described last week as “training grounds” for the country’s armed forces.
On Monday, Johnson signed an executive order creating ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Free Zones, prohibiting federal immigration agents from using city property in their operations.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Texas National Guard members reportedly gathered at a military camp near Chicago, despite objections from Pritzker, Johnson and several other Democratic leaders in the state.
