The Malaysian government is considering a proposal to take on a role as a mediator in efforts to achieve peace in the conflict-ridden country, Sudan.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister, Datuk Mohamad Alamin, this matter requires in-depth discussion since the conflict in Sudan also affects Malaysia's interests, including investments.
Speaking when winding up the committee-level debate on the Supply Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat, he stated that peace in Sudan is a priority for Malaysia that has great importance.
Mohamad Alamin stressed that Malaysia has experience in reconciling several international conflicts, including when he was the facilitator of peace negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia at the recent ASEAN Summit.
Earlier, Sudanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Hassan Abdelsalam Omer, praised Malaysia as a reliable partner and a leading voice in fighting for universal peace.
A proposal for Malaysia to use its position in the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) in leading a peace initiative for Sudan was also raised during the debate session.
However, in the meantime, Mohamad Alamin stressed that any involvement would be done after a comprehensive assessment and in close collaboration with the Sudanese side and international partners.
