Thousands of protesters have continued their protest movement against the Iranian government for more than three years, despite facing harsh crackdowns including a nationwide internet blockade for more than 72 hours.

Tensions among the people are rising after anti-government groups were seen filling the streets around the Iranian capital, Tehran, yesterday.

The main reason for the ongoing protests is the deterioration of living standards and the country's economy.

The riots broke out a few days after the Iranian currency, the rial, fell to its lowest level.

The fall in the value of the currency has triggered a rise in food prices and an inflation rate of more than 40%, in addition to the effects of a series of international sanctions.

Through a video verified by AFP, people once again gathered in northern Tehran yesterday, lighting fireworks and banging pots while chanting slogans in support of the deposed monarchy.

The two-week protests have become the biggest challenge to Iranian authorities, despite Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei openly pointing the finger at the United States.

President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was ready to help the movement after warning Iran was facing "big problems."

Trump also said he was ready to order new military action after Washington supported and joined Israel's 12-day war against Iran since June last year.

The US-based human rights group HRANA confirmed that the unrest in Iran has left more than 500 people dead, including 490 protesters and 48 security personnel.

According to the latest figures from activists inside and outside Iran, more than 10,600 people have been detained in the two weeks of unrest.
