If you’re planning a Raya trip to Thailand this year, you might want to hit pause. Right now, over 10,000 travelers are stranded across southern Thailand—places like Hat Yai, Satun, Betong—because of a severe fuel shortage.
Why? The recent tensions between Iran, the US, and Israel have caused Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, which handles 20% of the world’s oil supply. Thailand imports 70% of its oil from the Gulf region, and now gas stations are rationing fuel.
⚠️ Imagine this: a car can only fill 500–1,000 Baht (~RM60–RM130) worth of fuel. Stations run out in 3 hours, and it’s not just Bangkok—southern tourist spots are hit the hardest. Pai alone has over 10,000 foreign tourists stuck, unable to refuel to get back to Chiang Mai.
Even hospitals are struggling—they’re finding diesel just to run generators. The Thai government has banned all fuel exports, limited air conditioning to 27°C, and asked public servants to work from home. Daily subsidies are disappearing at RM130 million a day!
The problem has even spilled over to Malaysia: Thai vehicles are crossing the border to fill cheap fuel, prompting authorities to cap fuel purchases at RM35 per vehicle near Kelantan.
So, if you’ve already booked hotels and flights, think carefully. Being stuck for weeks during Raya isn’t fun. Sometimes, postponing your trip is the safest and smartest choice. Your family, your peace of mind, your Raya vibes—choose wisely.
