Gamuda Berhad has successfully secured the contract for the Public Works and Electromechanical Facilities Project of the Xiaogang–Linyuan Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line in Kaohsiung, Taiwan worth RM3.30 billion.
The contract was awarded by the Kaohsiung City Government Mass Rapid Transit Bureau, which is the MRT transportation authority of Kaohsiung city.
According to Gamuda, the latest success further strengthens the company’s position in the development of the rail system in Kaohsiung after the group’s active involvement in the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line Package YC01 and the city’s MRT Orange Line project previously.
The project was awarded to an unincorporated joint venture between Gamuda and local Taiwanese company, Shang Ting. Gamuda holds a 70% stake in the joint venture, while Shang Ting owns the remaining 30%.
Through this stake, Gamuda’s share of the contract is estimated to be worth RM2.31 billion.
Over a construction period of seven years and four months, the joint venture will act as the main contractor for the construction of three underground stations, one elevated station, a 3.88-kilometre underground double-track line and six cross-tracks.
This contract is Gamuda's tenth project in Taiwan since the company entered the country's market in 2002.
Previously, Gamuda also won the Kaohsiung Port Intercontinental LNG Terminal project as well as several other major rail and infrastructure projects such as the Xizhi Donghu MRT, Taoyuan City underground railway, Guantang Marine Bridge and the 345kV underground cable project.
Shang Ting is a private Taiwanese construction firm with a paid-up capital of around RM380 million and extensive experience in the local construction and public infrastructure sectors.
