Iran Reportedly Attacks US Military Bases in Kuwait & Bahrain

Tensions between the United States (US) and Iran have escalated again when Tehran announced that it had launched attacks on several strategic assets and US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Iran Claims to Target US Military Base

According to the Iranian military, the drone attack targeted Ahmad Al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait.

Iran stated that the attack targeted aircraft shelters, satellite communication systems and storage facilities for US military equipment.

Tehran also announced that the attack also targeted US military facilities at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain.

However, so far there has been no confirmation from the US on the extent of damage from the attack.

Conflict Widens

The attack came after the US military launched dozens of strikes on Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets across the country on Wednesday.

At the same time, the conflict also spread to other areas when two ships in the Port of Damietta, Egypt were reported to have been attacked by drones, causing fires.

No one has claimed responsibility, but analysts have described the incident as a sign of the conflict widening and potentially threatening key global trade routes such as the Suez Canal.

Shipping Routes Risks Increasing

Verisk Maplecroft analysts said drone and missile attacks are now increasingly widespread across various key global shipping routes.

Among the areas at risk are the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Indian Ocean.

This situation is expected to increase risks to global trade if the conflict continues.

Oil Prices Fall

Despite the resurgence of geopolitical tensions, crude oil prices recorded a decline.

Brent oil prices fell almost two percent to around US$87.30 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil fell 2.3 percent to US$81.71 per barrel.

The decline was driven by expectations that oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz would recover, thus reducing concerns about global supply disruptions.

US Considers Further Sanctions on Iran

US President Donald Trump has also proposed that Congress include tariffs on Iran in a sanctions bill that also targets Russia.

However, the move is expected to have limited economic impact as the US imports almost no goods from Iran.

Market Impact

The widening conflict continues to increase global market uncertainty. Risks to trade routes and energy supplies remain a concern for investors, even though oil prices are still falling for the time being. Any new disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz or the Suez Canal have the potential to quickly change market sentiment.
