Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli today made a decision that surprised many by announcing his resignation which will take effect on June 17, following his defeat to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the recent PKR deputy presidential election.
In an official statement, Rafizi announced that his resignation letter had been submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and he will spend the remaining annual leave starting today until the end of his service.
According to him, the decision was taken based on the principle of accountability and in line with democratic practices in developed countries, where leaders who fail to defend the party's mandate should make way for new leadership to assume roles in the government.
He also expressed his appreciation to all members of the Economy Ministry for the cooperation and dedication shown throughout his term of service, as well as expressing confidence that the policies that have been outlined, especially in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will continue to be implemented with high commitment.
Rafizi's resignation not only marks the end of a leadership, but also reinforces the practice of mature democracy that places party mandate and personal integrity before power.
